Elderly Driver Slams Into Woman, Damages Cars In Salem Walmart Parking Lot
SALEM (CBS) – A woman suffered serious injuries after she was hit by a car driven by an 80-year-old woman in the Walmart parking lot in Salem. Police said the woman who was injured, a Swampscott mother of three, was trapped under a car as she was leaving the store.
The incident took place around 2 p.m. Salem Police said the elderly driver lost control in the parking lot on Highland Ave.
The woman struck three parked cars. One vehicle in the parking lot had heavy front-end damage while another had its bumper ripped off.
The woman who was injured was putting her children in the car when the crash happened. Firefighters prepared for the worst but were able to use manpower to safely lift the car off her.
Salem Fire Captain Scott Austin estimates about 50 witnesses watched. "It's a little nerve-wracking, one working on the patient but knowing you've got a ton of people watching you," Austin said. "But it went well. Guys did great. They kept her calm."
The elderly woman driving was cited for speeding and negligent operation of a motor vehicle and police want her license revoked.
Police said the woman was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The woman's children were not injured.
