Heat Trade For Roxbury's Shabazz Napier, Lebron's 'Favorite Player In Draft'
BOSTON (CBS) -- Shabazz Napier is bringing his championship credentials to a team looking to raise another banner.
The Roxbury native was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets with the 24th selection in the NBA Draft Thursday night, but was quickly traded to the Miami Heat for a pair of draft picks.
Napier, who was named the Final Four's Most Outstanding Player just a few months ago after leading UConn to the NCAA title, averaged 18 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 4.9 assists last season as a senior. He won two NCAA Championships in his four years at Connecticut.
LeBron James, who opted out of the last two years of his Heat contract, Tweeted Thursday that Napier was his favorite player in the draft.
Napier was a very big name on the Boston basketball scene, spending two years at Charlestown High before transferring to the Lawrence Academy in Groton. He led Lawrence Academy to an undefeated 29-0 season as a junior in 2010, winning tournament MVP honors as they won the New England Prep Class C title.
For a brief moment Napier was teammates with another Massachusetts native, Noah Vonleh, who the Hornets drafted ninth overall.
