2-Year-Old Girl Shot In Roxbury; Father Believed To Be Target
BOSTON (CBS) – A two-year-old girl was shot in Roxbury Saturday afternoon. Boston Police say the girl was shot in the hand and leg while she was sitting in the back of her father's car on Winslow Street.
"It just rang out," a witness said. "It was just consecutive. It was just like bang, bang, bang."
Police say the girl's father, who is believed to have been the target of the shooting, was standing outside of the car at the time.
"The baby appears to be fine," Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said. "I went down and I visited with the baby down there in the hospital obviously, she's crying but she's alert."
She was brought to Boston Medical Center as a "walk-in" patient. Police say the girl's father is being questioned but is not cooperating.
"The father is a known gang kid to us who is also not telling us the truth of what happened and it's unfortunate," Evans said.
Investigators say the suspect, who has a beard, was driving a gray and black motor scooter when he opened fire.
City Councilman Tito Jackson is now pleading for the public's help. "Absolutely unacceptable that a young person in broad daylight in their neighborhood can't just be a child," Jackson said. "A two-year-old should never be in harm's way."
The shooting occurred as the neighborhood demands a change. Last week, a man was shot and killed in front a school bus with elementary school students on board.
"I was here unfortunately about 10 days ago when we had another senseless homicide over here on Dearborn with little kids on the school bus," Evans said. "We put a lot of visibility down here but unfortunately, we can't be here all the time."
