Rockland Woman Claims $1 Million Powerball Prize
BOSTON (CBS) - One of the four Massachusetts Powerball winners has collected her prize.
Mary K. Gilmore of Rockland, won a $1 million prize in last night's $587.5 million Powerball drawing.
"I'm kind of still out of it about it," Gilmore told WBZ NewsRadio 1030. "It's not really real yet."
Gilmore's quick pick ticket came just one number shy of hitting the record jackpot. She was the first of the winners to claim the Powerball second-tier prize for matching the first five numbers drawn.
"We're just regular middle class so it's always a good time," Gilmore said.
Gilmore just started a new job as a mortgage loan officer and told WBZ NewsRadio 1030 that she had purchased two tickets for the drawing. She gave one of the tickets to her boss for his 40th birthday and kept the other ticket for herself.
"I threw one in his card, one in my purse," Gilmore said.
Gilmore picked the right ticket because she is now $700,000 richer after taxes.
Gilmore said she is going to continue to work and "be smart about it," when it comes to spending her fortune.
"I've already paid off my mortgage, and now we're going to pay the student loans," said Gilmore.
After collecting her $700,000, she deposited it then went to work, not even stopping to look at a new car, to replace the old compact she's driving.
"No. I don't need a new car," she said, "I drive them into the ground, until they don't move anymore."
Gilmore bought her tickets at Tedeschi's in Rockland. That store will received a $10,000 commission for selling a winning ticket.
