Roche: Slow Progress For Clay Buchholz
BOSTON (CBS) - The Red Sox were hoping to have pitcher Clay Buchholz back in their starting rotation relatively soon coming out of the All-Star break. However, it doesn't appear that Buchholz will be back any time soon.
Buchholz was slated to throw a bullpen session Thursday at Fenway, but that was scrapped as he continues to deal with neck and shoulder injuries. He will be re-examined on Friday. Buchholz last pitched in a game on June 8th.
"As optimistic as were on this past road trip," Farrell said, "particularly coming out of his work sessions in Seattle where it felt like he was really turning the corner, he's still got some lingering soreness in there. And, some treatment through medication letting that take hold over these past few days. That re-examine will be done tomorrow (Friday). Hopefully that throwing program will start back up either tomorrow (Friday) or Saturday."
Buchholz, who is 9-0 with a 1.71 ERA this season, has dealt with injury problems throughout his whole career. In 2011, he was 6-3 with a 3.48 ERA through June 16th but had to shut it down for the rest of the season due to a back injury.
"We have every intention and hope and outlook that he will resume pitching this season", Farrell said.
The healing process of Buchholz may affect how GM Ben Cherington deals with the MLB Trade deadline on July 31st as he may be forced to look for more starting pitching.
Needless to say this is a huge story that bears watching....
