Roche: Ortiz On Board
BOSTON (CBS) - Good news for Red Sox fans Wednesday night as David Ortiz accepted Boston's offer of salary arbitration. That means he will be back next season.
By accepting, Ortiz is guaranteed a raise from the 12.5-million dollars he received last season. He could make somewhere between 13 to 15 million dollars next season.
The two sides were thought to be working on a two year deal on Wednesday worth around 20-million dollars (according to CSNNE's Sean McAdam). However, an MLB source told me Wednesday night that talks were shelved, for now.
The two sides can continue to talk about a one or two year deal right up until his hearing which would come in February. It will be interesting to see if new GM Ben Cherington upholds Theo Epstein's arbitration record of never having a player actually go to a hearing. Theo settled each and every case before then.
Meanwhile, Wednesday the 36-year-old Ortiz was named winner of this year's Edgar Martinez outstanding DH award after he hit .309 with 29 homers and 96 RBI.
