Roche: More Praise For David Ross
BOSTON (CBS) - On Monday, I wrote why the Red Sox' signing of back-up catcher David Ross was a solid addition by the team.
Today, I've got one quick note to add to the argument.
Here is a brief part of a column by Atlanta Journal-Constitution beat writer David O'Brien on the Braves losing Ross:
"Ross was as strong a presence in the clubhouse as the Braves have had during the past several years, and his intangibles – working with young pitchers, accepting and thriving in a secondary role to a perennial All-Star like McCann, always projecting optimism and good nature in the clubhouse – made him far more valuable than your typical backup catcher or bench player at any position."
The Red Sox have needed a calming presence behind the plate since Jason Vartitek retired, and they landed that guy in Ross.
The signing wasn't as flashy as many Boston fans would have hoped, or even the Ross everyone seems to be calling for. But it's a move that bodes well for what Ben Cherington is trying bring to the 2013 Red Sox.
