Roche: Jon Lester For Wil Myers?
BOSTON (CBS) - This is one of those "probably not gonna happen" deals, but it's still interesting when you break it down.
There's a story in the "Kansas City Star" that says the Royals and Sox have discussed a deal that would send Jon Lester to the Royals for hotshot prospect Wil Myers.
Like I said, probably not going to happen...but....would be one I would jump at if I were the Red Sox.
I have been a big Jon Lester fan over the years and feel like he's just been in a bad place pitching-wise the past few seasons. He's only 28 years-old(29 next season), has been a World Series winner, a two-time All-Star, and has proven he can pitch in a tough city like Boston. He also will be reunited with his favorite pitching coach in new manager John Farrell.
However, a kid like Wil Myers is a franchise type of player. He's the 2012 Baseball America and USA Today "Minor League Player-of-the-Year." The soon-to-be 22-year-old outfielder is 6-3, 205 pounds. He hit .314 in 134 games in AA and AAA last season with 26 doubles, 6 triples, 37 home runs, and 109 RBI. He had a .387 OBP and a .600 slugging percentage. He did strike out 140 times. He is in the prospect class of Bryce Harper and Mike Trout.
In other words....tough to pass up.
And, with the market rather bare and/or too costly this off-season, I think it's the perfect time for the Sox to try to pull something like this off. If the Sox baseball folks love, I mean l-o-v-e, the kid..and that's a big question....then go ahead.
It would be fun to watch unfold though, wouldn't it?
