Roche: Don't Kick Theo On His Way Out
BOSTON (CBS) - Just some quick thoughts on what went down Friday night when Theo Epstein officially resigned as GM of the Red Sox to become the President of Baseball Operations with the Cubs.

1) Don't kick Theo as he heads out the door to Chicago. Why does every break-up in this town have anger and hatred written all over it? The guy came here in 2001, took over as GM in 2002, and led the Red Sox to two World titles (including the first in 86 years), led the team to two more trips to the ALCS, and a total of six playoff bids in nine seasons. If I said to Red Sox fans that you would get that over the next decade from Ben Cherington, they would be more than happy to take that.
2) Don't discount the fact that Cherington has a good chance to be a very good GM here in Boston. He's been with the organization since 1999 and has done virtually every job you can do in the front office. He's learned under some very smart people. He's loyal, smart, and quite capable of running the show. Give him a chance. I think he'll be more than fine.
3) Time to celebrate. Now, we can get on to baseball matters...
