Roberto Luongo's Suspected Twitter Account Mocks Tim Thomas' Political Posts
BOSTON (CBS) -- So maybe this is why Roberto Luongo has never come out and said he runs the Twitter account @strombone1.
The account, which has a 99.99999 percent chance of belonging to the Canucks netminder, was originally created in mystery but has since become all but verified as Luongo. He often makes wisecracks and shows a sense of humor rarely found in pro athletes, and he used the account to make a joke at the expense of Tim Thomas.
"Some people say 4 more years of Obama," he tweeted Wednesday evening. "I look at it more like 4 more years of disgruntled goalie politically charged Facebook rants!"
In case it wasn't clear to whom Luongo was referring, he included a hash tag that said "I (heart) TT."
Luongo and Thomas obviously have some history, with Luongo saying he would have easily made a save on a shot that got past Thomas to win a Stanley Cup game for Vancouver. Luongo later complained that he had been "pumping [Thomas'] tires ever since the series started" but he hadn't "heard any one nice thing he's had to say about me." Thomas later joked that he wasn't aware it was his job to pump Luongo's tires, and Thomas ultimately got the last laugh by leading the Bruins to a Stanley Cup championship and winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP.
Within a year, though, Thomas altered his public image quite a bit in Boston. He skipped the team's trip to meet President Barack Obama at the White House, and he explained himself via his Facebook page. He also used his Facebook page to "stand with" Chick-Fil-A during the food chain's national controversy regarding gay marriage opposition, and in February he posted "I Stand with the Catholics in the fight for Religious Freedom."
Thomas hasn't been heard from in months since he announced on that same Facebook page that he'd be taking a year off from hockey, but if ever there was a time for ol' Timmy to hop back on Facebook and give us a post, now would be it.
