Robert Mueller, Set To Lead Russia Investigation, Preaches Integrity In Commencement Speech
MARION (CBS) -- The former director of the FBI and the man in charge of the Russia investigation made his first pubic appearance since being named special counsel Monday in Marion.
Robert Mueller addressed the graduates at Tabor Academy. He was asked to speak weeks ago before being thrust into the federal investigation.
Mueller spoke for about 15 minutes and did not mention his new role or the Trump administration.
"Whatever we do we must act with honesty and integrity, and regardless of your chosen career, you're only as good as your word," Mueller said.
The former FBI Director offered words of wisdom to the 133 Tabor Academy graduating high school seniors.
He focused on service, humility, patience with an emphasis on integrity.
"You can be smart, aggressive, articulate, you can be persuasive, but if you are not honest your reputation will suffer," Mueller said. "And once lost a good reputation can never, ever be regained."
They're all traits and characteristics Mueller will presumably continue to utilize as he's called into public service himself once again.
Mueller was appointed special prosecutor earlier this month by the Dept. of Justice to lead the independent investigation into possible ties between Russia and the Trump campaign.
Tabor Academy's headmaster John Quirk was relieved Mueller kept the event on his schedule amid the investigation.
"Whenever you're inviting a graduation speaker you try to bring someone who is going to be an example of all the things you want your students to be," Quirk said.
His speech Monday allowed for one last lesson on history in the making and civic duty for the class of 2017.
"Very honorable man, it's a true honor to have him in our presence today," said graduate Cole McCauley.
"His remarks were very poignant and it's definitely something that'll I'll hold with me for the rest of my life," said graduate Katie Cole.
Mueller's granddaughter is a member of the class of 2017 and introduced her grandfather as the keynote speaker.
