First Responders Stepping Up To Rescue Animals On Thin Ice
WESTMINSTER (CBS) – Firefighters in Massachusetts and New Hampshire have gone above and beyond the call of duty in recent days to help animals in trouble on the ice.
On Wednesday morning, Westminster firefighters teamed up with Massachusetts Environmental Police to bring a deer in distress on the ice safely to shore.
The day before, the fire department was at Wyman's Pond to rescue a duck that was not able to walk on the ice.
In Rindge, New Hampshire on Tuesday night, authorities saved a deer that got itself stuck on a pond.
The Fish and Game Department and the Rindge Fire Department responded to Emerson Pond, where the deer kept slipping on the thin ice and had been stranded for several hours.
Firefighters used an ice sled to get to the deer and bring her back to shore safely.
Additionally, Bedford police said Wednesday that the Animal Rescue League rescued several swans stuck on the ice at Fawn Lake. WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Lana Jones reported that two swans died, two freed themselves, and two were being evaluated by a wildlife expert.
Safety officials are warning the public that the ice is not safe for animals or people to be walking on.
