RI State Police called into Governor's race
State police say they're reviewing allegations by the former campaign manager for independent gubernatorial candidate Lincoln Chafee that records of his unemployment benefits were illegally obtained.
Det. Lt. John Lemont told The Associated Press Friday that the matter was under review. But he stopped short of calling it an active investigation.
J.R. Pagliarini resigned as Chafee's campaign manager on Thursday after acknowledging he received unemployment benefits while listed on the payroll of the Chafee campaign. He has said no intentional wrongdoing occurred.
The campaign says WJAR-TV presented the campaign with the unemployment records, which are private under state law.
Pagliarini's lawyer, Steve Erickson, says he was encouraged that Gov. Don Carcieri had contacted the state police.
