RI Lawmakers: Paw Sox Opening Day Named For Owner
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Some Rhode Island state legislators want to name opening day for the Boston Red Sox Triple-A affiliate in Pawtucket after its longtime owner.
The General Assembly's Pawtucket delegation is proposing a resolution that would see opening day called "Ben Mondor Day" in honor of the late owner of the Pawtucket Red Sox. The team's president, Mike Tamburro, and General Manager Lou Schwechheimer are expected to attend.

The Rhode Island state Senate is proposing a parallel resolution. The delegation is slated to present the proposal on Tuesday afternoon.
Mondor, who bought the franchise in 1977, is credited with rescuing the team from bankruptcy and turning it into a cornerstone of blue-collar Pawtucket's identity. He died last October at the age of 85.
