Shots Fired In Revere As Troopers Attempt To Stop Car; Suspect In Custody
REVERE (CBS) – Two State Police troopers were taken to the hospital after firing their weapon during a traffic stop in Revere.
A barber working nearby was out on a smoke break when he heard gunshots erupt at around 1 p.m. along Shirley Avenue.
"I never see that in my life I'm still shaking right now," said Zack Zarruk.
Authorities say two troopers were trying to stop a driver wanted for motor vehicle violations. Instead of coming to a halt, 21-year-old Juan Pineda of Lynn allegedly sped away – hitting a trooper in the leg in the process.
"They just went back into their cruiser and started chasing," said Kelly Var who witnessed the police pursuit.
At least one of the troopers fired their weapon but missed the suspect. Var heard at least two gunshots.
"I knew for sure that was a gunshot... and when I heard the shot I peeked outside and saw a lot of cruisers driving by," said Var.
Among the witnesses was a 10-year-old girl who lives across the street from the scene.
"She heard two gunshots go off, a woman scream and a car skirt off," said Julia Scott.
Pineda ditched the car and started running, but was eventually arrested.
Although it was a frightening afternoon, witnesses told WBZ-TV they're glad no one was seriously hurt.
"It's a relief. I hate to be around guns," said Zarruk.
Pineda is facing assault and battery with a dangerous weapon charges and will be arraigned in Chelsea District Court.
