14-Year-Old Driver Crashes Into Pole In Revere Overnight, Knocking Out Power
REVERE (CBS) - Thousands of customers lost power overnight when a 14-year-old driver crashed a car into a pole in Revere, police said.
The girl was out driving her brother's car, he told WBZ-TV, when she slammed it into a utility pole on Washington Avenue just before 2 a.m. Thursday. The crash brought the pole and the power lines down to the ground. The wires started burning. An officer working a detail nearby spotted the crash and called for help.
Homes in the area and some in nearby Everett and Malden lost electricity.
Revere Police said the girl was alone in the car and was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. A witness who heard the impact and rushed outside said the girl was in a daze and crying hysterically after the crash. Despite everything that happened, her brother said she went to school Thursday.
"Any accident where a pole comes down and live wires are involved, she is very lucky," Revere Police Lt. Thomas Malone told WBZ.
She might not be as lucky when it comes to possible charges though.
"To at least start with, the unlicensed operation. She was only 14 years old," Malone said.
The car was towed away just before 7 a.m. and National Grid crews began replacing the pole, repairing the wires, and restoring electricity.
Miguel Rivera lives nearby and lost power after the collision. He said Washington Avenue is notorious for car crashes.
"The last five months there have been three accidents over here," he told WBZ.
Drivers are asked to avoid the area. Malone said the road could be closed through the evening commute.
