Retired State Police Sergeant Running Marathon For Martin Richard
BOSTON (CBS) -- He will always be remembered as the state police sergeant who took those grisly photos of accused marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. He calls them the real face of terror.
Now, that same trooper is trying to help the family shattered by the evil acts that Marathon Monday.
"Well, it is important to me because of what happened to the Richard family could have happened to anyone," Sean Murphy said.
Murphy will be running the marathon for little 8-year-old Martin Richard who was killed in the bombing one year ago. Murphy will be part of team MR8, which are Martin's initials and his age. It is also his favorite number.
A photographed shortly before the Marathon bombing, shows Richard holding up a project he did for school reading: "No more hurting people. Peace"
Murphy says that has become the message of the organization.
The foundation will invest in education, athletics and the community.
Murphy says he gave the pictures he took of Tsarnaev's capture to Boston Magazine without permission from the Mass. State Police, after he was angered by a photo of the accused bomber on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, which he says upset many survivors.
"For them to be traumatized by what Rolling Stone did, and for me knowing that I had the real images of the face of terror, I knew I had to do it, I have slept comfortably ever since."
Murphy who is now retired says on this anniversary, he just wants to help those who lost the most.
"All of Boston was hurt last year, and I think everyone wants to help, so for me to help them, for me to run 26 miles, is nothing compared to what they are doing every day."
So even though he has never run a marathon, Murphy predicts he will have no trouble making it to the finish line, but just in case, he will be practicing on the hills of Newton. Murphy has a web site for the cause: www.run4martin.org
