NWS: Confirmed Microburst Hit Bedford, Other Areas On Monday

CONCORD (CBS) - Residents are cleaning up after severe storms caused significant damage in parts of Massachusetts on Monday.

The storms prompted tornado warnings, and while none were reported to have touched down, funnel clouds were spotted and a microburst was confirmed to have hit part of Bedford.

The straight-line wind damage stretched 2.5 miles by a half-mile wide, according to the National Weather Service. Wind speeds were estimated to be between 90 and 100 mph.

Around 60 trees were uprooted or snapped, with eight landing on homes.

NWS crews said other towns saw microburst damage as well, but none of the damage was as significant as that in Bedford.

Concord Country Club was among the places that saw damage. Toppled trees left the golf course with some large temporary obstacles.

"My heart was pounding," said Ryan Lemos, who was at the course when the storm hit. "We saw these trees fall over and the awning above us started to rip on the patio."

In Winchester, Stephen MacDonald's historic home now has a giant tree sitting on top of it.

"We're sitting there watching the news and they said Winchester was a possibility (for) a tornado watch. All of a sudden within three minutes I was out on porch and everything turns white," MacDonald explained.

Damage was also reported in Woburn and other surrounding towns.
