Reports: Red Sox, Cardinals Discussing Jake Peavy In Trade Talks
BOSTON (CBS) -- Jake Peavy came to the Red Sox last season as a deadline acquisition who shored up the team's starting rotation and helped win the World Series. The St. Louis Cardinals, at whose expense that Red Sox championship came, are apparently hoping to find the same luck in the very same pitcher.
According to reports on Tuesday, the Cardinals and Red Sox have discussed the veteran right-hander in trade talks.
ESPN's Gordon Edes noted Monday night that the Cardinals scouted Peavy's most recent start, in which he allowed two runs -- one earned -- on six hits and two walks over six innings in a loss to the Orioles.
On Tuesday afternoon, ESPN's Jayson Stark tweeted that there was a "buzz that Peavy to [Cardinals] could happen 'quick.'"
Later on Tuesday, Fox Sports' Jon Morosi tweeted that the two teams are indeed "engaged in trade talks" regarding Peavy.
Peavy, 33, has pitched better this season than his numbers indicated. He is 1-7 with a 4.64 ERA, and he's struck out 84 batters while walking 42. Last season with Boston, he went 4-1 with a 4.04 ERA in 10 starts before posting a 7.11 ERA in three postseason starts. That included an outing against the Cardinals in the World Series in which he allowed six runs -- two earns -- over just four innings.
The MLB veteran of 13 seasons with the Padres, White Sox and Red Sox is in the final year of his two-year, $29 million deal.
The Red Sox enter Tuesday night alone in last place in the AL East with a 39-50 record. The Cardinals, at 48-42, sit four games out of first place in the NL Central and one game out of the second wild-card spot.
