Boston College Hires Jim Christian As Men's Basketball Coach
BOSTON (CBS) -- Boston College has found their new men's basketball coach.
BC has hired 49-year-old Jim Christian, who spent the last two seasons coaching Ohio University to a 49-21 record. The Bobcats made it to the NIT last season, and won two games in this season's College Insider Tournament.
"Jim Christian brings three remarkable traits to Boston College basketball," Boston College AD Bates said in a release announcing the hire. "First, he sincerely cares about his student-athletes and will be a catalyst for their development as basketball players, scholars, servers and leaders, while creating a family culture that brings pride to the BC community. Second, his energy is contagious and his passion inspiring, which will resonate throughout our program. Finally, he is a proven winner with an outstanding winning percentage and three conference championships. We are very excited to have Jim Christian leading Boston College basketball, and look forward to an extraordinary future."
Christian also served as head coach at Kent State (2002-08) and Texas Christian (2008-2012), and is a 236-152 over his 12-year coaching career. He holds the best winning percentage in MAC history (.700) and reached 20 wins in all eight of his seasons in the conference.
Christian has a few local ties, as he attended Boston University (and played under Rick Pitino) for two years before transferring to the University of Rhode Island, where he helped the Rams make it to the 1988 Sweet 16.
Last month, Boston College fired Steve Donahue after four seasons on the bench.
