Sox To Get Gonzalez
BOSTON (CBS) -- Updated 3:45 p.m. WBZ has confirmed that the Red Sox and San Diego Padres have worked out a trade in principal that will send slugger Adrian Gonzalez to the Red Sox. The Sox will send top prospects pitcher Casey Kelly, first baseman Anthony Rizzo, and outfielder Rey Fuentes to the Padres in return.
ESPN first reported the news of the trade.
WBZ has learned that Gonzalez passed his physical held in Boston Saturday, but that does not mean the deal is done. The Sox and Gonzelez still need to work out a contract extension for the 28-year-old first baseman. Gonzalez has one year left on his deal with the Padres, and the Sox want him for the long haul.
Expect a deal that would total eight years and somewhere between $160-180 million when all is said and done.
Gonzalez, who hit .298 with 31 homers and 101 RBIs last season, would be the franchise player that Theo Epstein has been seeking. The move would also mean that Kevin Youkilis would slide over to third base. It would also end the Sox pursuit of Adrian Beltre.
