Sources: Rob Gronkowski Will "Likely" Have Back Surgery
BOSTON (CBS) -- Last week, there was good Rob Gronkowski news regarding surgery. This week, there's some potentially bad news.
According to NFL Network's Albert Breer, Gronkowski needs back surgery.
Breer reported that the surgery is "tentatively" scheduled for mid-June, and it will force the tight end to miss at least the start of training camp.
Sources tell WBZ's Dan Roche that the surgery is "likely" but not definite. Doctors will see if two to three weeks rest will change things.
Last week, Gronkowski underwent his fourth forearm surgery, and doctors determined he would not need any more work on his arm. However, a disc issue in his back was considered to possibly require surgery, and Breer's report Wednesday confirms that.
"The surgery on the back was expected, so Pats have planned for it," Breer tweeted.
Gronkowski was limited to just 11 regular-season games last season, catching 55 passes for 790 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Breer tweeted that Dr. Robert Watkins will perform the back surgery.
Bert Breer joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich to discuss the situation with the tight end.
