Red Sox Trade Yoenis Cespedes For Rick Porcello
BOSTON (CBS) -- The Boston Red Sox continue to make moves to help their rotation.
The Red Sox traded outfielder Yoenis Cespedes, right-handed pitcher Alex Wilson and minor league left-handed pitcher Gabe Speier to Detroit in exchange for starting pitcher Rick Porcello, the team announced Thursday.
Fox Sports 1's C.J. Nitkowski was the first to report the deal.
Porcello, though just 25 years old, has six seasons of big league experience under his belt. He owns a 76-63 record to go with a 4.30 ERA and 1.359 WHIP. Last season, he went 15-13 with a 3.43 ERA and 3.15 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
The Red Sox will have control of Porcello for 2015, after which he'll become a free agent.
The Red Sox initially acquired Cespeds last year at the trade deadline in exchange for Jon Lester and Jonny Gomes. He batted .269 with five homers and a .719 OPS in 51 games with Boston. Overall in his three-year MLB career, he owns a .263 batting average and .780 OPS. Cespedes is due to become a free agent after the 2015 season.
The Red Sox have been busy since Jon Lester decided to sign with the Chicago Cubs. In addition to the reported Porcello trade, they're reportedly close to agreeing to a trade to acquire starting pitcher Wade Miley and close to signing free agent pitcher Justin Masterson.
