Red Sox Trade Ciriaco To Padres For Player To Be Named Later
BOSTON (CBS) - With Jose Iglesias remaining in Boston as the Red Sox' utility man and top-prospect Xander Bogaerts promoted to Triple-A, Pedro Ciriaco was a man without a role in the organization.
So, the Red Sox have traded Ciriaco to the San Diego Padres for a player to be named later.
Ciriaco was designated for assignment on Monday after Will Middlebrooks was activated from the disabled list. The 27-year-old infielder struggled with Boston this season, batting just .216 with 11 hits in 28 games played.
The Red Sox are set in the infield for now, with Middlebrooks back at third, Stephen Drew at shortstop and Iglesias fitting into his utility role nicely.

Ciriaco was one of the few bright spots during the 2012 Red Sox season, hitting .293 in 76 games played. He especially thrived against the New York Yankees in 2012, batting .415 with seven RBI and 12 runs scored in 14 games against Boston's top rival.
