Report: Red Sox No Longer Discussing Sale Trade
BOSTON (CBS) -- The Red Sox may be content to stand pat at the trade deadline. Or, they may be readying to make a massive deal.
Dave Dombrowski's kept everything under wraps quite well thus far, so the feeling on Monday is that anything is possible.
And according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Red Sox are still among the top-two teams most likely to land starting pitcher Chris Sale, if the White Sox ace does indeed get traded.
Obviously, acquiring a player like Sale will come at a fairly large cost.
The report, however, was questioned by a source of Ken Rosenthal's.
Update: Boston's interest in Sale was shot down by Joel Sherman of The New York Post a little after 1 p.m.:
Just before that, the L.A. Dodgers acquired starter Rich Hill and outfielder Josh Reddick from the Oakland Athletics (both players are former Red Sox), sending a trio of prospects to Oakland. That essentially ends any chance of them acquiring Sale prior to today's deadline.
Sale's been the focal point of rumors all year long, and that's only intensified since he got himself suspended by the team for reportedly slashing up throwback jerseys which he didn't want to wear last weekend. Sale is 14-4 with a 3.17 ERA and 1.029 WHIP this season.
The trade deadline is at 4 p.m. ET on Monday.
