Report: Marblehead Cyclist Hamilton Officially Stripped Of 2004 Gold Medal
BOSTON (CBS/AP) – Marblehead native Tyler Hamilton has officially been stripped of his 2004 cycling gold medal, according to a report by Reuters.
The International Olympic Committee reportedly informed Hamilton on Friday that he had been disqualified from the competition.
The IOC can retroactively strip Olympic medals if proof of doping emerges later or an athlete admits to cheating. The IOC took away Marion Jones' five medals from the 2000 Sydney Games after she admitted using performance-enhancing drugs.
There is an eight-year statute of limitation, which was about to expire.
In a 2011 interview with "60 Minutes," Hamilton ended years of denials, admitting that he doped. He implicated teammate Lance Armstrong as well.
Retired Russian rider Viatcheslav Ekimov will be awarded Hamilton's gold medal. American Bobby Julich will receive the silver and Michael Rogers of Australia will be given a bronze.
