Report: Malkin Won't Face Supplemental Discipline For Hit On Boychuk
BOSTON (CBS) -- A dangerous hit from Evgeni Malkin on Sunday cost the MVP candidate two minutes in the penalty box, but that's all it'll cost him.
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Malkin won't face any supplemental discipline from the league for his hit from behind on Johnny Boychuk.
The hit came with 6:31 left in Sunday's Penguins win over Boston, when Boychuk skated to the corner in the Bruins' defensive end while facing the glass. Malkin skated from behind Boychuk and delivered a hit into Boychuk's back, sending the Bruins defenseman face-first into the boards. Boychuk needed a few moments to collect himself but eventually made his way to the Bruins' bench. Malkin was assessed a two-minute minor penalty for boarding.
Boychuck had just returned to the Bruins' lineup the previous weekend after missing a pair of games with concussion-like symptoms.
"It's a little bit dangerous, of course, because [he] wasn't too far from the boards," Malkin said after the game, according to the Post-Gazette. "I said I'm sorry, of course, but it's tough to say now. I haven't seen the replay."
Earlier in the game, Malkin had climbed to No. 1 in the league in points with his three assists bringing his season total to 84 (38-46-84).
Brendan Shanhan has issued five suspensions and seven fines for boarding this season, and six suspensions for hitting from behind. Among those suspensions was a three-game punishment for Andrew Ference's hit on New York's Ryan McDonagh, and a one-game suspension for Milan Lucic for hitting Philadelphia's Zac Rinaldo from behind.
