Report: Kevin Youkilis Wasn't Red Sox Clubhouse Snitch
BOSTON (CBS) -- When Josh Beckett expressed great frustration at the presence of a team "snitch" regarding the goings-on of the Red Sox clubhouse last September, the popular opinion (for whatever reason) was that the culprit was Kevin Youkilis. And so when Youkilis was traded to Chicago in late June, it was widely assumed that the "snitch" was gone.
That belief, though, appears to be wrong.
The Boston Herald's Michael Silverman reported on Friday that "the Red Sox still have a snitch problem on their hands."
The report references Bobby Valentine's story from Thursday, when he explained he was spoken to by ownership after offering a sarcastic critique of Will Middlebrooks in the dugout earlier this season. A source told Silverman that a representative from ownership spoke with Valentine after the comment, "with the team concerned that perhaps the manager was being too harsh with the younger players."
Ownership only learned of Valentine's dugout comment to Middlebrooks because a current player went to the owners to rat out the manager. And that player was not Youkilis.
"The club source also said that the snitch was a current player," Silverman reported.
Snitch or no snitch, the Red Sox are struggling, falling back to .500 last night with a loss to the 45-60 Twins. The Red Sox currently sit nine games out of first place in the AL East and four games out of the wild card with three teams ahead of them.
