Report: If Healthy, John Farrell Will Be Back As Red Sox Manager

BOSTON (CBS) -- If John Farrell receives a clean bill of health, he'll reportedly be back on the bench for the Boston Red Sox in 2016.

Farrell took a leave of absence in mid-August after revealing that he is battling stage-one lymphoma, and is currently in the middle of his final chemotherapy treatment. He'll undergo a scan at the end of the month to determine if the cancer has been eradicated.

If doctors give him the thumbs up to return to baseball, CSNNE's Sean McAdam is reporting the Red Sox will announce that Farrell will return as manager of the team.

"Two baseball sources confirmed that Farrell has been told as much, while another source revealed that president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, in his first address to the staff in mid-August, said Farrell's job would be waiting for him next spring," writes McAdam.

Farrell led Boston to a World Series title in his first year on the bench in 2013, with the Red Sox winning 97 games in the regular season to win the American League East, but the team has struggled since. They finished in last place in the AL East in 2014, finishing the season 71-91, and Boston was 50-64 under Farrell before he left the team in August.

Interim manager Torey Lovullo has led the Sox to a 28-16 mark since taking over for Farrell.

Farrell signed a two-year extension with a team option last winter, and is under contract through at least the end of the 2017 season.
