Report Details Westwood Mother's Alleged Brutal Attack On Daughter
WESTWOOD (CBS) -- A Westwood mother is facing attempted murder charges after allegedly attacking her 9-year-old daughter with a set of electric hedge clippers.
According to the police report, her daughter called police shortly before 5 a.m. Monday, telling them her mother was trying to commit suicide.
When police arrived, the father of the child was holding his wife, 39-year-old Maureen Mullin, in a bear hug.
The woman was allegedly repeating, "I just wanted us all to be together."
When police entered the home, they found the 9-year-old had a severely lacerated thumb as well as lacerations to her hands, arms, neck and face.
Police say both the woman and the girl were taken to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.
Chief Jeff Silva said the girl's father had stepped in to stop the attack after waking up to the screams of his children.
According to the report, the man found his wife with her arm around his daughter and the running hedge clippers near the daughter's face.
Police say an orange extension cord was stretched from another room, in order to run the hedge clipper.
According to police, when her husband pulled the plug on the hedge clippers, Mullin then went down to the kitchen where she threatened to take her own life with a kitchen knife.
The couple's 5-year-old daughter was not physically harmed, police said.
Mullin was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing at an arraignment on charges including of attempted murder, assault and battery on a child and mayhem at her hospital bedside on Monday.
Police did not say what sparked the situation but Mullin was being treated for depression, according to the police report.
