Report: Cleveland Indians, Terry Francona Share 'Mutual Interest' For Manager's Job
BOSTON (CBS) -- Terry Francona will likely manage in the major leagues again, and according to reports, it may be with the Cleveland Indians.
The Indians fired manager Manny Acta this week, naming Sandy Alomar Jr. as the interim manager. While some reports say the team will strongly consider keeping Alomar as the permanent manager, other reports indicate the team will target Francona for the job.
Peter Gammons tweeted that "there is mutual interest between Francona and Indians. They'll all know better after weekend. Peace, love and understanding may be [more important than money]."
Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported that Francona and the Indians have made "preliminary contact," but it's not yet known "Whether the Indians could pay Francona a large enough salary to persuade him to leave his job as an analyst for ESPN."
Rosenthal added that the Indians might be too far out of contention to truly appeal to Francona, though there may not be better jobs available this offseason.
As a player, Francona batted .311 for the Indians in 1988, primarily as a designated hitter. He also worked briefly for the Indians' front office in 2001.
