Report: Celtics Deny Nets Opportunity To Speak To Coach Doc Rivers

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Brooklyn Nets need a head coach, and with heretofore unfounded rumors persisting that Doc Rivers might be considering leaving the Boston Celtics, the Nets figured they'd take a shot in the dark and ask the Celtics for permission to talk with Doc.

Not surprisingly, Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge gave them a pretty flat "no" in response.

According to ESPN's Jackie MacMullan, Ainge denied the Nets a conversation with Rivers about Brooklyn's head-coaching vacancy and said that Rivers will be back as Celtics coach next year.

"Doc has told me he's coming back," Ainge told MacMullan. "I talk to him almost every day about our team and what we are going to do moving forward."

Rivers, 51, signed a five-year extension for about $35 million in May 2011.
