Renewed Focus On Greig Led FBI Agents To Whitey Bulger

SOUTH BOSTON (CBS) - The FBI hit the jackpot when they turned their focus to Whitey Bulger's longtime girlfriend, fugitive Catherine Greig.

The 60-year-old former dental hygienist was known to be obsessive about her appearance and her teeth, and the FBI used it against her. The most recent public service announcement aired around the county during TV shows that target women.

Last year, officials put wanted ads in cosmetic surgery magazines. Greig had had several plastic surgeries even before taking off with Bulger.

It worked. And that is a relief to Greig's twin sister, Margaret McCusker, who lives in South Boston. She wouldn't speak on camera, but over the phone told WBZ-TV, "I'm very happy my sister is alive and well and I look forward to seeing her soon."

WBZ-TV's Lauren Leamanczyk reports.

Before fleeing with Bulger, Greig lived in a Quincy home. She still owns the house. Neighbors said Catherine fixed up the house and talked often to her neighbors.

"She was very friendly," said Dana Olson, who remembers how Greig cared for a neighbor with cancer.

Angela Helton of Northeast Media Associates, which along with Black Fly Media produced the PSA, spoke to WBZ-TV:

Another neighbor would only speak through a window, but said she saw Greig just before she disappeared. The woman says she always felt bad for Greig.

When asked why she thought Greig would go on the run with Bulger, the neighbor replied, "Would you like to be killed? She knew too much. She couldn't leave him."
