Red Sox Want Sip From Stanley Cup

BOSTON (CBS) - With the Stanley Cup back in Boston for the first time since 1972, everyone wants a chance to get a glimpse of it.

And in the Boston Red Sox case cases, a sip from it.

"I've talked to Youk and Papi," said forward Shawn Thornton. "I'll do my best to make sure those guys get a sip out of it."

Thornton has been pals with David Ortiz since using his locker during the 2010 Winter Classic at Fenway Park. Thornton called Papi's locker early on, and would not let anyone else use it.

Now he wants to give Papi a taste of the Stanley Cup.

"Whether it's my day with the cup or during the time that we have it as a team. I'll make sure at least those two guys get a sip," he said.

"I've heard rumors about that," said Conn Smythe winning goaltender Tim Thomas. "It's a great thing. We appreciate the support from the other sports here in Boston. Hopefully we can reciprocate."

The Red Sox are not the only ones reaching out to the Bruins. Celtics Captain Paul Pierce tweeted Thursday morning, "Congratulations to The Boston Bruins Stanley Cup Champions 2011 is there a better sport town than the bean I think not."

With the Stanley Cup now back home in Boston, the city has won at least one of the four major trophies in the last seven years, an accomplishment unheard of in professional sports.

CBSBoston.com will carry the Bruins Stanley Cup Championship Parade live Saturday Morning at 11 am.
