Red Sox Trade Kelly Shoppach To Mets For Player To Be Named Later
BOSTON (CBS) -- The Boston Red Sox have traded catcher Kelly Shoppach to the New York Mets in exchange for a player to be named later.
Shoppach, 32, has played primarily as the backup to Jarrod Saltalamacchia this season. He hit .250 with five homers, 17 RBIs and a .798 OPS in his 48 games this season. Shoppach had been rumored to potentially be traded prior to the non-waiver trading deadline on July 31, though the Red Sox held on to him at the time.
It's not the first time Shoppach has been traded by the Red Sox. The catcher was packaged with Andy Marte and Guillermo Mota to Cleveland in January 2006 in exchange for Coco Crisp, Josh Bard and David Riske.
In his career, Shoppach is a .227 hitter, averaging 20 homers per 162 games played. His best season came in 2006, when he hit .261 with 21 home runs and 55 RBIs.
In addition to Saltalamacchia, the Red Sox also have Ryan Lavarnway on their roster.
