David Ortiz Is Red Sox Lone AL All-Star, Will Start At DH
BOSTON (CBS) - Red Sox star David Ortiz has been voted as the starting designated hitter for the American League at the 2012 MLB All-Star Game.
Ortiz, 36, is having one of best seasons of his career. He leads the team with 21 home runs and 53 RBI to go with a .305 batting average.
This will be Ortiz's eighth appearance at the Mid-Summer Classic, and the first time as the team's lone representative. The last time the Red Sox had just one All-Star was 2001 (Manny Ramirez).
Joining Ortiz in the starting lineup are Mike Napoli (C), Prince Fielder (1B), Robinson Cano (2B), Adrian Beltre (3B), Derek Jeter (SS), Josh Hamilton (OF), Curtis Granderson (OF) and Jose Bautista (OF).
AL reserve players include Joe Mauer (C), Matt Wieters (C), Elvis Andrus (SS), Asdrubal Cabrera (SS), Miguel Cabrera (3B), Ian Kinsler (2B), Paul Konerko (1B), Adam Jones (OF), Mike Trout (OF), Mark Trumbo (IF/OF), Billy Butler (1B) and Adam Dunn (1B/OF).
Pitchers Ryan Cook, Matt Harrison, Felix Hernandez, Jim Johnson, Joe Nathan, Chris Perez, David Price, Fernando Rodney, CC Sabathia, Chris Sale, Justin Verlander, Jered Weaver and CJ Wilson all made the team, too.
Representing the National League in the starting lineup will be Buster Posey (C), Joey Votto (1B), Dan Uggla (2B), Rafael Furcal (SS), Pablo Sandoval (3B), Melky Cabrera (OF), Carlos Beltran (OF) and Matt Kemp (OF).
