Red Sox Sign SP Aaron Cook To Minor League Deal

BOSTON (CBS) – The Boston Red Sox are still in need of help in the starting rotation, and are rummaging through the bargain bin to find it.

Over the weekend, general manager Ben Cherington may have found one of those deals.

WBZ-TV's Dan Roche has confirmed Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal's report that the Red Sox are close on a minor-league deal with veteran right hander Aaron Cook.

The 32-year-old Cook is a career 72-68 with a 4.53 ERA. He went 3-10 with a 6.03 ERA for the Rockies in 2011, the final year of a three-year, $29.5 million contract. He did not pitch for Colorado until June after breaking his right index finger in spring training. Cook's best season came in 2008, when he went 16-9 with a 3.96 ERA in 32 starts. He is a career 1-1 in the playoffs, with his lone postseason loss coming in Game 4 of the 2007 World Series to the Red Sox.

Cook will likely contend to be Boston's fourth or fifth starter this coming season. If he makes it to the big leagues with the Red Sox, he would receive a prorated salary of $1.5 million.

Cook worked with current Red Sox pitching coach Bob McClure during his days in Colorado.
