Red Sox Sign Carlos Silva, Rich Hill, 10 Others
BOSTON (CBS) - The Red Sox have signed veteran hurler Carlos Silva and 11 other players to minor-league deals, the team announced on Tuesday.
The team announced the signings of Silva, Brandon Duckworth, Charlie Haeger, Will Inman, Doug Mathis, Tony Pena Jr., Chorye Spoone, Jesse Carlson, Rich Hill, Justin Thomas, Pedro Ciriaco, and Nate Spears.
A soft-tosser, Silva did not pitch in the majors in 2011. He's had an up-and-down career, pitching to a 4.68 ERA and 1.39 WHIP.
Carlson, a former Blue Jay, may give the team some depth as a lefthanded reliever.
Duckworth, Haeger, Hill, Pena Jr., and Spears all spent parts of last season in the Red Sox system.
