Red Sox Add De Aza To Outfield Mix
BOSTON (CBS) -- The Boston Red Sox have added another outfielder to the mix.
The Red Sox have swung a trade with the Baltimore Orioles for eight-year veteran Alejandro De Aza and cash considerations, sending minor league right-handed pitcher Joe Gunkel to the O's. To make room for De Aza on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Brandon Workman was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
The Orioles designated De Aza for assignment last week after a rough start to the season at the plate. He hit just .214 in 30 games, striking out 34 times in 112 at-bats.
Known more for his speed and defense, the 6-foot, 195-pound Dominican can play all three outfield positions. He's spent most of his eight-year career playing center or left field.
Boston will be the fourth team De Aza has played for over his eight-year career, debuting with the Marlines in 2007. He has also suited up for the Chicago White Sox, and has a career line of .265/.328/ .401 with 41 homers and 81 stolen bases over 596 games.
The Red Sox have struggled to get consistent play out of their outfield this season, with the group batting a collective .235 on the year. They have just 15 homers from their stable of outfielders, with Hanley Ramirez responsible for eight of them (four of his 12 homers came while serving as Boston's DH).
De Aza has played in 17 games at Fenway over his career, batting .258 with a pair of homers and 10 RBI.
