Red Sox Receive World Series Rings; Ortiz Given Special MVP Ring
BOSTON (CBS) -- The Boston Red Sox have handed out World Series rings three times in the last 10 years, so the team has a pretty good idea what it's doing when it comes to the commemorative bling.
The 2013 World Series rings they handed out on Friday may have raised the bar though.
Each player received a 14-karat white gold ring, created by jewelry designer Jostens, that includes 126 diamonds, 16 custom-cut sapphires and nine custom-cut rubies. The player's name and number are on the right side of the ring, and each one was customized to highlight the number of World Series titles they've won in Boston. A "bearded brothers" image is on the inside of the ring, along with 10-30-13, the date the Red Sox clinched last season's title at Fenway Park.
In addition to the 2013 World Series ring, David Ortiz was also presented with a special MVP Ring for his 2013 postseason performance. The top of the 14-karat white gold ring features nine custom- cut genuine rubies depicting the hanging Sox logo over a handset diamond pave surface. The words "World Series" encircle the top of the ring, and above the hanging Sox is a diamond crest, forming the letters MVP.
The right side of Ortiz's MVP ring has the Red Sox 'B' logo with the words "3x World Champion '04 '07 '13" above it, and Ortiz's number 34 below. The left side has an image of the DH, and his World Series stats (remember that ridiculous .688 batting average) inscribed on the inside of the ring.
While the rings themselves are pretty special, the people who brought them onto the field are the ones who made Friday's ceremony. Survivors of last year's Boston Marathon Bombings carried the ring boxes from the outfield to the infield, including Rhode Island's Heather Abbott, Adrianne Haslet-Davis (who shared a brief dance with Red Sox CEO Larry Lucchino when she arrived at the infield), and Carlos Arredondo, known as the Man in the Cowboy Hat, among many, many others.
MBTA officer Dic Donohue, who was shot in Watertown during the manhunt for the two bombing suspects, was part of Friday's festivities, and managed to take a "selfie" with Ortiz.
