Red Sox Reach Deal With Sweeney, Kalish To Have Surgery
BOSTON (CBS) - An MLB source confirms to WBZ's Dan Roche that Red Sox outfielder Ryan Kalish will undergo surgery on his right shoulder next week.
The source also confirms that the Sox have also agreed to a minor league deal with outfielder Ryan Sweeney.
On Twitter Friday night, Sweeney wrote:
The surgery on Kalish will be performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum. There is no timetable for his return. The surgery is on his non-throwing shoulder, but one would expect Kalish to miss most, if not all, of Spring Training at the very least.
The 24-year-old Kalish was voted the 2010 Red Sox Rookie-of-the Year by the Boston Baseball Writers Association, but has played in just 36 major league games the past two seasons after undergoing neck and shoulder surgeries.
Kalish was a 9th round pick of the Red Sox in 2006 and made his major league debut on July 31st, 2010. In 53 games with Boston in '10, Kalish hit .252 with a .305 OBP and a slugging percentage of .405.
However, Kalish was only able to play in 24 minor league games in 2011 after having neck and shoulder surgeries. And in 2012, in 36 games with the Red Sox, he hit just .229.
Kalish was finally getting healthy and was ready to compete for a play-off spot in Sox camp. That will once again be put on hold though.
Meanwhile, Sweeney appeared in 63 games with Boston last season after being part of a deal with Oakland that brought Andrew Bailey to Boston while sending Josh Reddick to Oakland. Sweeney started strong, but then struggled. His season ended when he broke his hand after punching a wall in frustration.
