Moncada Blasts Two For First Multi-Homer Game
BOSTON (CBS) -- Red Sox fans are salivating at the progress top prospect Yoan Moncada has made in the minors this season, especially from a power standpoint.
Moncada's recent power surge continued Monday night, with the 21-year-old switch hitter blasting a pair of homers in an 11-4 Portland Sea Dogs win over Trenton. It's the first multi-homer game of Moncada's career, giving him seven round trippers in his 21 games in Double-A after hitting just four homers in 61 games in Single-A.
The No. 5 prospect in all of baseball actually went 0-for-3 to start his Monday evening, with a pair of strikeouts, before sending a pair of baseballs over the fence. He led off the seventh inning with an opposite field solo shot:
Moncada then broke the game wide open with a three-run monster shot with two outs in the eighth inning:
Moncada has thrived since jumping up to Double-A, hitting .329 with a .415 OBP in his 94 plate appearances. He's batting .405 in July with six homers and 16 RBIs, and has a hit in 12 of his last 13 games. He's also reached base in 15 straight games.
In 82 total games this season between the two levels, Moncada has posted a .313/.424/.545 split with 11 homers, 54 RBIs, 78 runs scored and 43 stolen bases (in 52 attempts).
At this point, it seems like it's just a matter of time before Moncada gets a taste of the Majors.
