Ortiz Goes 9-for-12 Against Astros
BOSTON (CBS) - David Ortiz is probably disappointed the Red Sox have to leave Houston.
The Astros couldn't figure out a way to get Ortiz out over the last three games, with Ortiz going 9-for-12 at the plate.
After starting the series going 1-for-3 in Boston's 2-0 loss on Monday, Ortiz went 8-for-9 the rest of the way, rattling off 10 straight plate appearances in which he reached base. In that span, Ortiz clubbed eight singles and walked twice.
Recap: Red Sox Come Back Against vs. Astros For 7-5 Win
On Thursday, Ortiz went 4-for-5 for his second straight four-hit game. The slugger now has 21 four-hit games in his career.
"Hey, that ain't bad, huh?" Ortiz said after the game with a huge smile on his face.
"We've seen he can get into those stretches where he sees the ball as good as anyone," manager John Farrell said after Boston's 7-5 win on Wednesday. "It's impressive what he's doing. I think any time you string together [eight] consecutive hits there's a lot going for you. But you also got to be a pretty damn good hitter to be doing that."
Ortiz started another Red Sox comeback on Thursday, leading off the ninth inning with a single. He was lifted for pinch-runner Drake Britton (yes, the reliever), who later scored with Jonny Gomes on Stephen Drew's game-winning three-run homer.
Ortiz's batting averaged climbed from .318 to .332 after the series against the Astros and he's now up to 73 RBI on the season -- tops on the team.
Preview: Lester Starts Off 4-Game Set Against Royals
It's just too bad the Red Sox are done with the Astros this season; in seven games against Houston Ortiz hit .630 with two doubles, two home runs, and 10 RBIs.
Though Ortiz is batting .625 (5-for-8) against Boston's next opponent -- the Kansas City Royals.
