Red Sox' Ortiz Makes 9th All-Star Team
BOSTON (CBS) - David Ortiz is off to his ninth All-Star game later this month.
Ortiz was the one of three members of the Red Sox named to the American League squad on Saturday for the mid-summer classic in New York.
This will be Ortiz's fourth straight All-Star game, and marks the seventh time he has made the team as a starter. Ortiz, 37, received 6,226,301 votes through the fan ballot, the fifth-most among AL players.
Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia and starting pitcher Clay Buchholz were also named as All-Stars on Saturday night. Buchholz, who is injured, is unlikely to play in the game.
Ortiz, who was out until April 20 while rehabbing an Achilles injury, leads Boston with 17 home runs and 61 RBIs, and is batting .321. He ranks second in the American League with a .409 on-base percentage, and third with a .615 slugging percentage (prior to Saturday's games).
Ortiz is 5-for-14 in All-Star games with one home run and three RBIs. His lone homer came in his All-Star debut in 2004.
The 84th MLB All-Star game will be played on Tuesday, July 16 at Citi Field in New York.
