Ortiz Holds Fan's Baby During National Anthem

BOSTON (CBS) - David Ortiz is better known for smashing baseballs -- and more recently, dugout phones -- but the Red Sox slugger certainly has a softer side.

That was on full display Thursday night in Kansas City.

Despite pounding out back-to-back four-hit games, Ortiz received the night as the Red Sox opened a four-game set with the Royals. Before the game, he was speaking with fans and signing autographs when one Sox fan asked if he would take a picture with his young child.

Ortiz obliged, and even took it one step further. He kept the infant in his arms and took him on the field for the singing of the National Anthem.

So there it was, the image of David Ortiz holding a baby as he stood with his teammates, hat over his heart, as the Anthem played.

Ortiz has been getting it done at the plate all season, and after his meltdown in Baltimore a few weeks ago, it's good to see the softer side of "Big Papi" show again.
