- Friday marks the 16th time the Red Sox have opened the season against the defending American League champion. They have played the AL Champs in their last three openers (Rays in 2009, Yankees in 2010).
- David Ortiz will start his eighth straight opening day as DH, a Red Sox record.

- Catcher Jason Varitek will not start Friday, but has started a Boston record 10 opening days behind the plate.
