Red Sox Make Ross Official, DFA Atchison
BOSTON (CBS) - The Boston Red Sox officially signed outfielder Cody Ross to a one-year contract on Thursday, designating right-hander Scott Atchison for assignment to clear the roster spot.
Boston had a full 40-man roster, and needed to make a move in order to make room for Ross.
The 35-year-old Atchison made 17 appearances over six stints with the Red Sox in 2011, posting a 1-0 record with a 3.26 ERA and notched his first career save. He also pitched in 36 games with Triple-A Pawtucket.
Ross played all three outfield positions for the Giants in 2011, batting .240 with 14 home runs and 52 RBI over 121 games. He will provide some depth in the outfield, and could see a lot of action early on in the season as Carl Crawford recovering from wrist surgery.
Ross earned MVP honors for the 2010 NLCS while with the Giants after batting .350 with three home runs and five RBI, and hit .294 with five home runs and 10 RBI in 15 games overall that postseason to help the Giants to the World Series crown.
