John Farrell Receives Phone Call From President Obama

BOSTON (CBS) - The trophy had been presented and the duck boats had already made their celebratory trek through the streets of Boston, but one thing remained before the Red Sox World Series title was officially official.

Watch: Obama on the phone with John Farrell

On Monday afternoon, shortly before he was set to address the Boston media following a weekend of celebration, Boston manager John Farrell received a phone call from President Barack Obama to congratulate him on the team's championship.

"I'm sure customary to past winners during his administration he called to congratulate," Farrell said. "Hopefully there's a chance somewhere around Opening Day next year when we open up in Baltimore that we might be able to swing by as a group and say hello."

"The President noted the great job that Farrell did in his first year managing the team, remarked on the incredible pitching performance by Koji Uehara,  and extended his congratulations to David Ortiz on being named the World Series MVP," the White House said in a release. "The President said he looks forward to welcoming the Red Sox to the White House to congratulate them in person."

As Farrell mentioned, the Red Sox open their World Series defense at Camden Yards in Baltimore on March 31, which is about an hour away from the Nation's capital. They have April 1 scheduled as an off-day, so it's possible the team could be honored by the President  during the season's opening series.
