Red Sox Gonzalez Swings Away

FORT MYERS, Fla (CBS) - Adrian Gonzalez was back in the swing of things Thursday morning.

The Red Sox slugger hit 36 balls off a tee after taking Wednesday off. This marks the third time in four days Gonzalez has swung a bat, a great sign as the first baseman comes back from offseason shoulder surgery.

"He did real well, tolerated everything," manager Terry Francona said Thursday afternoon.

Gonzalez will hit again on Friday, in hopes he can increase the amount of swings every few days.

Gonzalez played most of the 2010 season with a torn labrum while with the San Diego Padres. Despite the injury, he hit 31 home runs and only missed two games for San Diego.

Gonzalez received medical clearance to begin hitting on Monday, four months and a day after the surgery was performed. Although there is no timetable when he can play in games (which start Saturday for the Red Sox), Gonzalez is optimistic he will be ready when the regular season begins April 1st.
