Roche: If Price Is Their Man, Red Sox Should Go Get Him Now
BOSTON (CBS) -- The MLB Hot Stove is heating up, with the Winter Meetings less than a week away.
The free agent bonanza is expected to get underway any day now, with the Boston Red Sox front and center among the teams looking to make a big splash.
Up first on Dave Dombrowski's wish list is bringing in an ace for the front of the rotation, and it appears he has his sights set on lefty David Price. Just last week, a rival general manager told Peter Gammons he believes the Red Sox will offer Price $30-40 million more than any other team.
WBZ-TV's Dan Roche is counting down the days until pitchers and catchers report to Fort Myers for Spring Training (we're at 82 days), and joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich on Tuesday to discuss the team's interest in Price.
Roche says if the Sox really want to lock up the lefty ace, they should do it before everyone heads to Nashville next week.
"I have to think that Dombrowski has targeted Price and will get him signed before the Winter Meetings. If Price is down in Nashville and is sitting in front of all these owners, the price will keep going up and up and up," he said. "If you have the idea that you have to overpay for Price, you have to go in and get him now… If you feel that this is the guy to go get, then you have to go get him."
There is actually a plethora of aces on the open market this winter, from Price to Zack Greinke to Johnny Cueto. The Sox could even use their collection of talent in the farm system to acquire an ace via trade, but Roche doesn't think that's the path the team will take this winter.
